I. Details of the Event/Activity
As part of our ITC414 course requirements, our team, NextGen, conducted a webinar entitled “Cyber Security: Protection of Computer Systems and Data from Digital Threats.” The event was held through Google Meet and livestreamed on Facebook to make it accessible to more participants. The guest speaker, Mr. Rannie Q. Dela Rea, shared valuable insights about current cybersecurity threats such as malware, phishing, and other online attacks. He also discussed practical ways to secure computer systems, networks, and sensitive information from these risks. As one of the organizers, I contributed by coordinating with my groupmates to help ensure the program ran smoothly, including assisting with the event flow and managing the Q&A portion.
II.Reflections on the activity give rise to (learnings/key takeaways)
The webinar made me realize that digital threats continue to evolve together with advancements in technology. One important lesson I learned is that cybersecurity should not only concern security professionals, but also developers and ordinary users who handle digital information. Mr. Dela Rea emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to protect systems and data instead of waiting for security breaches to happen before responding. In addition, being part of the organizing team taught me the importance of teamwork, preparation, and communication in successfully conducting a technical event.
III. Reflections of possibilities on implementing some of the activity input on a practical level (practical application of learnings)
The lessons from the webinar can be applied directly to my future work in software and web development. In creating systems such as management or human resource applications, I can use the knowledge I gained by focusing on secure data handling and protecting user information. I also plan to apply secure coding practices, such as validating user inputs, improving authentication methods, and ensuring safer database connections. These practices can help strengthen the systems I develop and reduce the risk of cyberattacks similar to those discussed during the webinar.
IV. Positive Feedback (on the event organization)
The webinar was well-organized and professionally managed by the NextGen team. The transition between each part of the program was smooth, and the simultaneous use of Google Meet and Facebook Live allowed the event to proceed without major technical issues. Mr. Dela Rea explained complicated cybersecurity topics clearly, making them easier for participants to understand and apply in real-life situations. The Q&A session was also engaging, as many participants actively asked questions and showed strong interest in the topic.
V. Suggestions for improvements to be made/considered for future activities
Although the webinar was informative and successful, future events could be improved further by including live demonstrations or interactive activities. For example, presenting a simulated phishing attack or conducting a simple cybersecurity walkthrough could help participants better understand the concepts through practical examples. Extending the Q&A portion may also encourage more interaction and provide participants with additional opportunities to ask questions and clarify important topics.
